Knee Surgery Dampens Stoudemire’s Season

April 5th, 2006 · No Comments

Amaré Stoudemire’s basketball season is officially over. Stoudemire underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday morning at Banner Samaritan Outpatient Surgical Center.

Stoudemire will be on crutches for 7-10 days and can return to on-court basketball activities within six to eight weeks. The Suns confirmed through a press release that timetable will preclude him from any comeback attempt this season.

Team physician Dr. Thomas Carter removed debris caused by normal wear and tear of the kneecap. That debris led to inflammation in the knee and the development of a Baker’s cyst behind the kneecap that filled with fluid and was responsible for the stiffness and discomfort Stoudemire experienced during his three-game comeback attempt which ended on Mar. 27 in New Jersey.

The cyst was drained of fluid. No other isolated defects involving the meniscus, ligaments or any other area of the knee were found.

The recovery and rehab timetable would put Stoudemire on schedule to take part in Team USA basketball activities this summer. The team will begin workouts on July 19 in Las Vegas.
