The right knee pain that sidelined Twins second baseman Luis Castillo for the Chicago
White Sox series last month and again for a game in Texas this week can be traced to April of last season and is expected to require surgery eventually, Castillo said before Friday night’s game.
Castillo, who said the knee felt about 70 percent as he rejoined the lineup Friday, pulled his left quadriceps while legging out a triple for the Florida Marlins on a cold night in Colorado on April 26, 2005, and the other leg began bothering him later in the season as he compensated for a still-gimpy quad, he said.
He planned to be fully recovered by spring through weight training and therapy, but the discomfort has lingered — spiking at least twice this season when he hit bases awkwardly while running out ground balls.
“It’s hard to play like that,” he said, “but it’s better than it was last year.”
The Twins’ medical staff agrees he probably will need a “cleaning out” procedure on the knee after the season.
Manager Ron Gardenhire, who said he expects Castillo to be well enough to play throughout the four-game weekend series against Chicago, also said he is prepared for the knee to be a recurring issue this season.
